What’s the deal with legalization?

After more than a few failed attempts to pass legalization measures, California voters finally showed up in force with the passing of Proposition 64 on November 8, 2016. This groundbreaking measure, in addition to totally decriminalizing recreational marijuana, called for the establishment of a safe, taxed and regulated legal marijuana industry within the state. The ballot received close to 8 million ‘yes’ votes at a margin of 57%, the highest number of votes a measure like this has ever received. Wow. A day after its passing, possession, cultivation and use recreational marijuana was legalized, and a little over a year later at the beginning of 2018, state businesses were allowed to begin selling marijuana to the public.

California was the fifth state to do this, and now are at 11. Truly we have come so far as a country. We’ve faced almost 100 years of unjust persecution and oppression thanks to federal prohibition of marijuana; and now, in just eight years, 22% of all US states have passed similar legalization measures. This is an unprecedented amount of forward progress, and hopefully it won’t be much longer until we can get that number up to 100%.

How does medical marijuana work?

Like recreational marijuana, medical marijuana typically contains the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC for short, albeit in much smaller, almost negligible quantities. Instead, medical marijuana relies on the healing properties of cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN) and cannabigerol (CBG) to provide the medicinal benefits it is known for. Together, these compounds have been shown promise in aiding depression, anxiety, severe pain, glaucoma, and even conditions like Fibromyalgia, among numerous others.
