Is weed legal?
The bad news here is that New York does not yet have legal marijuana, although the good news is that a number of recent developments seem to indicate a legalization vote could be a real possibility in the near future. For one, the state has established a medical marijuana program, which for a lot of states has been an important precedent in moving towards legalization. On another more major note, Governor Cuomo has recently signed a bill improving the state’s recreational marijuana decriminalization, removing fines and punishment for low-level marijuana infractions and even adding automatic expungement for past convictions. This one is huge; preventing unnecessary prison sentences and oppression by the law is one of the main objectives of the legalization movement, so the fact that the state would seek to expedite things by automating it is great news. in addition to all of this, Cuomo has also added marijuana legalization to his 2020 budget proposal, which would need approval by legislators by April 1 in order to go anywhere, but it’s still a great sign that even the highest-level officials in New York have legalization as a priority.
