So is weed legal for me?
Sad to say, but recreational marijuana is not yet legal in the state of Ohio, though some recent shakeups seem to suggest legalization could be a real possibility in the near future. One of these is the state’s recent establishment of a statewide medical marijuana program. Even though this measure passed in 2016, detractors have stalled the state from opening dispensaries until 2019. However, there are now almost 60 in Ohio, so it does appear that the program is doing well for itself.
The other big shakeup was the Cincinnati City Council’s recent decision to completely decriminalize recreational marijuana. Currently in the state of Ohio, low-level marijuana offenses carry a ‘reduced’ criminal status, which still leaves room for unfair fines and punishment. Because of this, activists have been campaigning for total decriminalization, scoring their first major victory in Cincinnati. Given that keeping innocent people out of prison is one of the primary motives of the legalization movement, this is a huge victory, and hopefully this will only add fire to the greater legalization movement.
What’s the deal with medical marijuana?
Whereas recreational marijuana is intended to get users ‘high’ by way of prominent levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), medical marijuana is not.
