So is weed legal here?
The sad news here is that recreational marijuana is currently still illegal in Ohio, though a few recent developments indicate that this could likely change in the near future. One of these would be Ohio’s establishment of a statewide medical marijuana program, which for other states has been an important stepping stone towards legalization. Despite gaining voter approval back in 2016, implementation has been a bit slow, with the first licensed dispensaries not opening until 2019. However, there are now almost 60 dispensaries in the state, so it does appear that this program is doing well for itself.
The other big development is the Cincinnati City Council’s recent decision to completely decriminalize recreational marijuana. Statewide, low-level marijuana infractions currently hold a ‘reduced’ criminal status, which is certainly a start, but it does still leave ample room for unfair and oppressive punishments. Because of this, activists have been campaigning to completely decriminalize marijuana, gaining their first major victory in Cincinnati. Given that preventing these kinds of unfair punishments and prison sentences is one of the primary goals behind the legalization movement, this is a huge win, and will hopefully inspire other municipalities to follow suit.
What’s the difference between medical and recreational marijuana?
By nature, the two are quite similar, though they differ in some key areas that make a world of difference. Recreational marijuana is intended to get users ‘high’, which is a result of the cannabinoid THC. Medical marijuana also generally will contain THC, albeit in much smaller quantities. Instead, medical marijuana utilizes large concentrations of the cannabinoid CBD, which provides a host of medicinal and healing benefits for a large number of people.
