Growing Tips for Gelato
Gelato is tricky to grow and takes a cultivator with an intermediate level of experience to bring to harvest. Gelato marijuana plants will thrive indoors and outdoors, but have an easier time growing indoors because of the ability to completely control the climate. If you choose to grow indoors, you will have to replicate a steady environment similar to the climate of the Mediterranean. Gelato cannabis seeds produce plants that are covered in white, resinous trichomes, making them appear dipped in sugar, which is perfect for this sweet and tasty strain.
If you choose to grow outdoors, you will need to hope for consistent temperature and humidity to grow these plants to completion. Doing so will ensure that you grow healthy buds from the top of the plants to the buds closest to the soil. Having access to a greenhouse is the best way to give these plants the perfect outdoor climate without having to put up with unexpected outdoor variables. These plants grow to a medium height and can reach around 3-6.5 feet tall. Because the plants reach a maximum indoor and outdoor height of 6.5 feet, they are going to need ample headroom to grow to fruition.
The ideal temperature for these plants is around 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit and slightly cooler at night. Humidity levels should be kept around 30-50% during the vegetative growth stage and the flowering stage, but lowering the humidity every week will help this plant grow. Growing indoors will ensure that the moderate humidity levels and moderate temperatures are consistent and maintained every day that the plants are in the growing stages.
Topping and Low-stress training (LST) methods are the best training techniques for this particular strain of cannabis. If performed correctly and at the right time, these techniques will promote bud production and increase final yields. LST manipulates the plants by tying down the branches to increase the size and density of the buds while allowing them to grow almost naturally. Topping is used to control the height of the plant and buds. The Gelato strain requires an 18-20 hour light cycle to reach the vegetative growth stage. Changing the light cycle to a 12/12 cycle will help to induce the flowering stage of growth and get your plants to harvest.
Yields, Flowering Time, and Harvest
- Flowering Time: Growing indoors, you can expect the Gelato strain to harvest after a flowering period of 60-70 days.
- Yields: While Indoor yields are around 600 grams per square meter, outdoor grows typically produce up to 800 grams per plant. Gelato’s yields are absolutely massive and full of resinous buds.
- Harvest: Outdoor growers can plan on harvesting their yields around the end of October, depending on when the seeds were planted.

The Gelato cannabis strain terpene profile is directly responsible for how the plant smells and tastes, and the strong effects it has on its users. The most dominant terpene in this strain is caryophyllene, while limonene, linalool, and myrcene are the secondary terpenes.
- Caryophyllene: Most Dominant – This is known as the spicy or peppery terpene and can be found in cloves, black pepper, and cannabis plants.
- Limonene: Secondary Terpene – Limonene is found mostly in the rinds of citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges.

I am in love with this strain! The citrus sweet aroma and flavor is absolutely amazing, and the green buds are just stunning.
